BOCA RATON Florida Atlantic's struggling defensive line took another hit when Florida Atlantic coach Howard Schnellenberger said junior defensive end Jermaine Council will not start in Saturday's home-opener against UAB at Lockhart Stadium.

Schnellenberger did not disclose the nature of the injury, but said senior Julian Myers will be in the starting lineup in place of Council.

"He's quick off the ball and if he weighed more than 230 pounds, he'd be a major force," Schnellenberger said of the 6-foot-3 Myers.

Council's injury means the Owls will be without two defensive ends projected to start for the Owls when they began training camp.

Council started against Texas last Saturday and was helped to the sideline after a play where he had the wind knocked out of him. He was back on the field a few plays later and finished the game with two tackles.

Schnellenberger didn't say if Council's injury is related to that play, "It's hard to pin down," Schnellenberger said.

Senior defensive end Robert St. Clair, a Forest Hill High graduate, had knee surgery two weeks before FAU played Texas.

Myers, who came to FAU as a linebacker will be making his first career start against the Blazers.

Against Texas, the Owls' defensive front had trouble penetrating the Longhorns' offensive line.

"I would say our pass rush had improved a degree, but was nowhere near what we need to have," Schnellenberger said.

Schnellenberger also announced a change at center where junior Kevin Miller will start instead of senior David Matlock, who played against Texas in place of the injured Nick Paris, who is out for at least the rest of the month with strained ligaments and a hairline fracture in his left foot.
