FSU next on Howard’s wish list
While Florida Atlantic is still negotiating with Miami for a game in 2009, the Owls would like to set up a series with another in-state power.
FAU coach Howard Schnellenberger said he plans to talk to Florida State about trying to get on the Seminoles schedule - perhaps even playing the first game in the Owls’ new stadium.
Schnellenberger said he has talked with the Seminoles in the past about a game, but FSU didn’t have much interest.
That’s too bad. Long-time FSU and UM fans will remember the intensity some of the games between Schnellenberger’s Hurricanes and Bobby Bowden’s Seminoles had before ‘Wide Right’ became part of the lexicon.
If the UM-FAU series becomes a reality - and the latest update is that talks are still going on - FSU would be the final I-A team in the state who hasn’t played the Owls.
So long stump:: The tree stump Schnellenberger stood on every Wednesday of game week since 2001 is being sent to the woodshed - or at least to a corner of the Oxley Athletic Center.
Schnellenberger made his last “stump” speech to the school’s cafeteria on Wedneasday.
Now that the cafeteria has been reconfigured and is smaller, Schnellenberger found he didnt need to stand on it to delier his weekly pep talks to get students to games,
Schnellenberger with the Owls 4-3 and 3-0 in the Sun Belt Conference, the reaction to his speeches is better than ever before.
“Instead of being booed when I started speaking in the cafeteria, I was loudly cheered,” Schnellenberger said. “It’s a growing swell. That’s the way it goes when you start doing better.”
